How to Connect to Others on You Bloom
By The Patio, On Jun/05/2008

After setting up your page, you'll next want to connect to some of the other active members on the site.  You can start with members featured on the home page, or use the Browse at the top of the page to explore the site.

I went to each Profile that had a thumbnail, and checked out their site.  If they looked like someone serious about music, I clicked the 'Add to Friends' link in their Profile Summary section.

New to YouBloom?
By The Patio, On May/28/2008

If you're new to YouBloom, here are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Top Nav Bar

There are two main ways to navigate the site.  One is to use the Top Nav bar links:
    My Profile: takes you to your public page.  It looks different when you're signed in.
    Browse: explore the site
    Upload: is a short cut to the Upload Media page
    Top Music: Review new tunes and meet new artists
    Quick Start: Help pages
    Invite: Bring your friends on board to enjoy the site
    My Home: This is where you manage your Profile

2. My Home

Click on the 'My Home' link at the top of the page.  This is where you'll manage your profile.
The most important section is the left hand side of the page.  Take a minute and open each of the tabs in the Manage and Communicate sections and familiarize yourself with all of the links and options.

    Applications: here you choose which Application you want to feature on your page.  To use a feature, click 'Manage'.
    Contacts: Manage your Friends and Artists
    My Account: Edit, and manage your settings, create your layout, set your preferences
    Points: Keep track of and manage your points
    Message Center:manage messages, friend requests and rewards messages.
    Browse: explore the site
    Invite: your friends to YouBloom!

3. My Profile

Click this link on the top nav bar.  Decide a section you want to change the look and feel of.  Click the 'pencil' icon on the name bar of that section and you'll be taken to a page where you can 'Edit the Application'.  Change the background, fonts, color etc. of that Application and Preview your choices on the left hand side of the page..  Once you've chosen the features, you also have the option to apply the same features to any or all of the other sections of your Profile page before saving your changes.

When you are logged in, remember that you can move the different sections on your Profile page [we call them Applications] by clicking on the header of each section, and simply 'dragging' it to a new position!

 Hello!

I have received many songs forwarded from The Patio and others.  Yet none of them will play for me.  The YouBloom Player works fine when I visit an artist profile page.  But when I click on the links you sent me, a player opens up by itself on a page and won't play.

I'm using a Mac with OS X and am having the problem with both Firefox and Safari web browsers.

Finally, the FWD a song function does not appear to provide a way to go directly to the artist's profile OR a way to reply to the person who sent it.  That is why I am posting this here.

Am I missing something?

Hope this helps.

All The Best,

John

Downward Facing Dog

Apr/03/2009

I received a question from a new artist member asking why one would WANT to have friends or artists.  What does it mean?  It seems like an obvious question.  Yet answering it was more challenging than I imagined.  I'm posting my attempt at an answer here for comment and clarification.  Here's what I replied:

Well, the original difference envisioned for YouBloom, as distinct from sites such as MySpace or Reverb Nation, was to give musicians and other micro businesses the capacity to market themselves using the same kinds of tools large corporations use.  These include data mining, targeted incentives, and access to potential lists of fans and customers.  Developed in conjunction with founders of the Electronic Frontier Foundation - an advocacy group for freedom and privacy on the web - the strategy was to avoid spam with a clear opt in approach to email and other forms of viral marketing.

Essentially there are scores of acts who have compiled lists of contact information for fans and prospective customers of between a couple hundred to a couple thousand names and email addresses.  When fully implemented, the idea is that individuals (friends) can choose to receive announcements about gigs or products for sale and control the frequency and type of information they are willing to receive.  By partnering with other artists, based on location or style of music (for example), an act can expand the reach of their promotional efforts without infringing on the rights of people they have never met who have never heard of them.  Also, the privacy of an artist's list - the email addresses, etc. - stay private and controlled by that artist.  If I partner with you, because I think my fans would also like your music and vice versa, I essentially forward your announcement  to those of my fans who have agreed to receive information about similar bands, gigs in their area and the like.

Although the entirety of the original idea has yet to be realized, the basic structure is in place and the simplest form of cross pollination is already taking place.  That is how I found you and learned about your music!  A friend of mine recommended I check out a project you are involved in, I saw you were an artist of that project, and sent you a request.  Now we are (presumably) listening to each others music and discussing the overall integration of the YouBloom toolbox with our personal objectives.

When you add me as an artist, rate one of my songs, or leave a comment on my page, all of my friends and artists have a chance to see you and click through to your page to hear your music.  There they also have a chance to become exposed to your other friends and artists - folks they might otherwise never have heard of.  With only about a thousand members at this point, the practical effect of a YouBloom account is admittedly still somewhat limited.  Still, as facebook overtook MySpace in popularity as a social networking site, YouBloom could well overtake MySpace as a place for music.  That is why I have embedded my YouBloom players on all my MySpace pages (I am involved with about four different musical projects at this point).  Myspace has almost 100 million members and millions of bands.  All are searchable by postal code, style of music, specific interests and influences.  The paradigm of viral marketing is that for every new connection made we open up the potential for exposure to hundreds if not thousands of fresh contacts.

Of course the music still has to be compelling!  Yet the possibility now exists to succeed outside the constraints of the conventional, corporate music industry and its antiquated systems of record promotion and distribution.

All The Best,
John Baltic (of downward facing dog band)

OK, just answered my own question:
Remove the Nimbit player from my apps, add the youbloom player, then paste this code into the head of the basic info in edit profile:

<style>.a { Hide Music Player } embed, object {filter:alpha(opacity=0.1); opacity:0.01;} td td td td embed, td td

td object,td.text embed, td.text object {filter:none; opacity:none;} .interestsAndDetails {margin-top:-90px;}

</style><div style="position:absolute;top:0px;left:0px;margin-top:10px;width:80px;height:60px"><object

type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="never" allowNetworking="internal" height="60" width="80"

data="http://apps.rockyou.com/helpspaceAd3.swf">
  <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="never" />
  <param name="allowNetworking" value="internal" />
  <param name="movie" value="http://apps.rockyou.com/helpspaceAd3.swf" />
  <param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
  <param name="quality" value="high" />
</object><a

href="http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vd3d3LnJvY2t5b3UuY29tL2V2ZW50cy90cmFjay5waHA/ZXZlbnQ9aGVscHNwYWNlLWJ1dHRvb

i1jbGljayZ1cmw9aHR0cCUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy5yb2NreW91LmNvbS9oZWxwc3BhY2U=" target="_blank"><img src="

http://apps.rockyou.com/images/spacer.gif " width="80" height="60"

style="position:absolute;top:0px;left:0px;border:0px;background-color:transparent"/></a></div>
<style>.userProfileApp
{
position: absolute;
left: 55%;
top: 250px;
margin-left: -10px;
width:440px;
border-style:none !important;
border-color:949494;
border-width:0px;
background-color:transparent;
visibility:visible;
}

</style>

Some of this code may be redundant; further experimentation may reveal which.
I'll post the results here if desired.

Hi all, Newbie here.
Thanks for the tip on adding the player to myspace. Does anyone know how to place it at the top of the page? You can do it with the Nimbit player by setting a style tag with position parameters, but you need to know the class ID of the widget.
All help appreciated.

Jay

Hi!  It's me again.  Hey.  Put that music player on shuffle.  Would ya?

Seriously, I just forwarded a profile.  Everything worked fine.  But when I wanted to go back to the user's profile I had forwarded, there was no return link.  My back buttons worked.  But I had to go through two or three previous screens to get to where I wanted to go.  I've noted a similar problem with getting back to an artist's profile when you are somewhere on their store.

Thanks again and loving the way things are realizing.

two utes

Feb/25/2009

Hello!

I notice when I google "two utes youbloom.com" I get a link to our store - not our profile.  the actual link is:

http://www.youbloom.com/web/twoutes/profile?p_p_id=store&p_p_action=0&p_p_state=maximized&p_p_mode=view&p_p_col_id=&p_p_col_pos=0&p_p_col_count=0&_store_struts_action=%2Fstore%2Fcustomer_review&_store_action=view&_store_type=1&_store_itemId=music_710  instead of our simple profile address.

This is a bit of a problem.  But what compounds it is there is no link on that store page TO our profile.  As I am working to drive traffic to YouBloom.Com and to our artist page, it concerns me that any fan or potential fan who tries to find us ends up in a mysterious place with no real indication that it has anything to do with our band.

Am I missing something?

I know it's all coming together.  Just trying to work this stuff out.

All The Best,
John "Yonko" Baltic
